Homeopathic remedies for headachesHomeopathy is a safe and effective form of complementary medicine and homeopathic remedies can be taken safely by anyone from newborn babies through to the elderly, without any complications. There are no risks of poisoning or overdosing with homeopathic remedies, as there are with conventional headache tablets. There is also no risk of a build up or tolerance to the homeopathic remedies for headaches.

There are many different causes of headaches and the most common type of headache is Tension Headache which is caused by stress, fatigue, alcohol or smoking. Tension Headaches can also occur in women before and after periods. Recurring headaches could be a sign of an underlying health condition, so it is recommended to see your G.P.

The remedies below may help to treat acute headaches, but it is advisable to consult a professional Homeopath in order to get a complete cure and prevent the headaches. The Homeopath will investigate any possible trigger factors, diet and any possible emotional causes during the consultation.

These remedies should be taken every 30mins for up to six doses then three times a day for up to 3 days and in the 30c potency. These are just a few of the many homeopathic remedies that can be used to treat headaches.

Belladonna is a natural remedy for intense headaches that start suddenly with a throbbing pain. The symptoms are generally worse for noise, light or movement.

Bryonia should be taken if the headache started from stress or from being angry. The head may feel bruised and the person may have a bursting or stitching pain. A key indication of this remedy is that the headache will be worse for any movement and that the person will be very thirsty.

Iris Versicolor is an effective homeopathic remedy that starts after a period of stress, for e.g. on a weekend after a busy week. These headaches are usually right sided and can cause nausea and vomiting. The headaches are worse for lying and rest (opposite to Belladonna and Bryonia).

Nat Mur should be taken for headaches that are caused by the sunlight and affect the forehead with a throbbing, hammering or bursting pain. The person may also be more thirsty than normal. Another indication for this remedy is if the person wants to be left alone and doesn’t show their emotions. The symptoms are usually worse for warmth and are better in the fresh air.

Sepia is the main remedy for headaches that start during periods. The head may feel “heavy” and the pain is usually one sided. The person may be complaining of always being tired and have a low mood.

Nux Vomica is the main homeopathic remedy for headaches that start from digestive complaints caused by over indulgence from alcohol or rich food. The person may be under a period of stress and the headaches are usually worse for noise and in the morning.
