Tips for planning a healthy diet

There is so much advice these days about how to eat healthy, but here are our top tips for planning a healthy diet for you and your family: A healthy breakfast can jumpstart your metabolism, and eating small, healthy meals throughout the day (rather than the standard three large meals) keeps your energy up and your metabolism going. Every change you make to improve your diet matters. You don’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to completely eliminate foods you enjoy to have a healthy diet.  The long term goal is to feel good, have more energy and reduce the risk of cancer and disease. Don’t let your missteps derail you—every healthy food choice you make counts. Start slow and make changes to your eating habits over time. Trying to make your diet healthy overnight isn’t realistic or smart.  Changing everything at once usually leads to cheating or giving up on your new eating plan. Make small steps, like adding a salad (full of different colour vegetables) to your diet once a day or switching from butter to olive oil when cooking.  As your small changes become habit, you can continue to add more healthy choices to your diet. Avoid fruit juices, which can contain up to 10 teaspoons of sugar per cup. These can be diluted with water.Canned fruit is often in sugary syrup, and dried fruit, while an excellent source of fibre, can be high in calories. Avoid fried veggies and those with dressings or sauces, as these generally contain too much unhealthy fat and calories. Listen to your body. Ask yourself if you are really hungry, or have a glass of water to see if you are thirsty instead of hungry. During a meal, stop eating before you feel full. It actually takes a few minutes for your brain to tell your body that it has had enough food, so eat slowly. 50-60% of the population is gluten sensitive or intolerant. I suggest trying an elimination diet where you eliminate all forms of gluten, seeds, and nuts from the diet. This allows one to easily begin to identify any  offending food because after the seven days is over, you begin introducing any potential offender one...

Can Fish Oils During Pregnancy Prevent Baby Eczema

Fish oils have been found to protect unborn babies from eczema. The Australian scientists have discovered that mothers who took omega 3 supplements were less likely to have babies with eczema. Studies have found that taking omega 3 supplements during pregnancy also resulted in a 50 per cent less chance of developing intolerance to eggs. Researchers at Adelaide University carried out the study on 706 pregnant women with a family history of allergies. Half of the women were given fish oil supplements to take three times a day from the 21st week until full term. The other half of the study group were given vegetable oil as a placebo. Scientists used Efalex Mother & Baby, which is a high strength omega 3 mixture. So the results of this study are only applicable to this health supplement. The British Medical Journal (BMJ) commented that more research is required to see if fish oils can protect against asthma and hay fever. One in Four Toddlers Have a Vitamin D Deficiency

Latest research has found that one in four toddlers in the UK are lacking in vitamin D. This vitamin D deficiency can lead to various illnesses and health conditions such as weak bones and in severe cases rickets disease. A more concerning statistic was that more than half of healthcare professionals are also unaware of these guidelines. This indicates that the health authorities may not be getting the message across. These guidelines would suggest that the NHS (National Health Service) would provide vitamin D supplements to all toddlers. These findings were described as a major health issue by Dr Benjamin Jacobs, consultant pediatrician at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. The research revealed that 74 per cent of parents knew nothing about vitamin D guidelines. These guidelines recommend that all children under the age of five should be given vitamin D supplements. Dr Jacobs told BBC Breakfast, “We see about one case of rickets a month in our hospital, but that’s the very severe end of the disease. “There are many other children who have less severe problems – muscle weakness, delay in walking, bone pains – and research indicates that in many parts of the country the majority of children have a low level of Vitamin D.” Rickets disease is a rare disease that affects bone development in children. This disease can soften bones and lead to bone deformities. Rickets is believed to be a disease of another age, although doctors are now seeing more and more cases. The disease was all but eradicatedby the 1940’s with the use of vitamin D supplements. Vitamin D is naturally formed in our bodies in response to sunlight. It is also found in oily fish such as salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel. Vitamin D is also found in milk, eggs, porridge, sweet potatoes, mushrooms and vegetable oils. By the 1950’s, there was a concern that children were getting too much vitamin D in their food and with supplements. Due to this fear, unlike other countries, vitamin D supplements were stopped in the UK. “It’s really only over the past 10 years orso that I’ve noticed children with Vitamin D deficiency. And still I would say today, the majority of doctors, health visitors, midwives,...

Vitamin D can reduce the risk of mental illness in children

Vitamin D can reduce the risk of mental illness in children

Are your children getting enough sunshine? A new study has found that children with low levels of the “sunshine vitamin”, vitamin D, are more likely to suffer with depression in later life. Children who had the highest levels of this vitamin were found to have a 10 per cent lower risk of developing mental illness. The Daily Mail has reported the Children of the 90’s research project, which was carried out at the University of Bristol. The researchers analysed vitamin D levels in more than 2,700 children at the age of nine, and they were followed up at the age of 13. The results found that those children with low levels of vitamin D were more likely to demonstrate signs of depression. Children who had higher levels of vitamin Dwere less likely to show signs of depression throughout their teenage years. This study also found that the specific type of vitamin D that you take is very important. The two types of vitamin Dthat were investigated were, vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3(colecaliciferol). The study found that the D3 form had the strongestanti-depressant link. Vitamin D is naturally formed in our bodies in response to sunlight. It is also found in oily fish such as salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel. Vitamin D is also found in milk, eggs, porridge, sweet potatoes, mushrooms and vegetable...

Childhood Obesity… and what we should be doing about it!

Childhood Obesity… and what we should be doing about it!

New figures have revealed that one in three children is overweight when they leave primary school at the age of 11. These new statistics are very alarming, especially as a fifth of these children are classified as clinically obese. This is quite a scary rise in childhood obesity. Health experts have warned that many of these children will remain overweight for the rest of their lives. This will result in a higher risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and other illnesses such as arthritis. These NHS figures also reveal that the number of 10 and 11 year olds who are classed as overweight has increased by 10 per cent in just over four years. There is a major concern among health professionals that the Government is not taking this epidemic seriously. Although, experts have warned that many of these children will remain obese through to adulthood, this condition can be reversed. The “cure” requires a combination of eating less, eating healthy and exercising. This may sound very simple, but even adopting one of these tips will result in weight loss. Eating less will result in less calories being consumed. Again, this may sound too simplistic, but this does work. Cutting portion sizes and including more fruit and vegetables will result in weight loss. You should also make sure that your child drinks enough water. Hunger is often misinterpreted for thirst. Drinking water will also keep your child hydrated more alert. Why not substitute water for sugary fizzy drinks and juices? These drinks contain a lot of sugar which adds to the calorie count and ultimately weight gain. Exercise is a big issue with many children. Most children do not exercise enough. A big reason for this is the lack of after school clubs, and safety in parks and sports grounds. Team sports are a great way of getting children to communicate and stay healthy. Exercise can also be done at home, without any equipment. Exercises such as jumping squats, lunges and star jumps can easily be done at home. We hope you found our  childhood obesity article useful. Homeopathy for Temper Tantrums

Homeopathy for Temper Tantrums

Temper tantrums or outbursts of anger, shouting, screaming and crying are unfortunately common occurrences for many young children.  There are many reasons why children may throw temper tantrums, and these situations need to be addressed before giving any remedies. However it is sometimes possible to seek help in homeopathy for temper tantrums. Teaching children how to behave through adequate parenting and behavioural techniques should be the first line of treatment. Unfortunately, this does not always solve the problem. Temper tantrums are not always a sign of poor parenting. Children may have deeper emotional disturbances, either from emotional or physical trauma. Children who have tantrums may be frustrated, bored or not mentally stimulated. Emotional stress during pregnancy can also have an impact on your child. This can manifest itself in the form of tantrums or outburst of anger early in childhood. Other factors that can cause temper tantrums are tensions within the family, lack of attention, jealousy or if clear disciplinary boundaries have not been set. Tantrums are common with the arrival of a new sibling, as there is naturally a shift in the amount of attention that the child receives. Other possible causes of tantrums are food intolerances and teething. If you suspect your child may have a food intolerance please consult your GP or nutritionist. Please refer to the article Homeopathy for Teething for help with treating teething. The following homeopathic remedies should be given in the 30c potency twice a day for up to one week. If the tantrums still persist after this time your child may require constitutional treatment to get to the root of the problem. This requires a full consultation with a qualified homeopath. Chamomilla. This remedy is for children who are extremely oversensitive and want to be carried and held. The child moans because s/he cannot have what they want. The child wants many things which they then refuse. It may seem like nothing satisfies them. Chamomilla is the main remedy for teething and colic. The child is only calmed when being carried and held. This remedy is for tantrums that are mainly at night. Cina is a homeopathic remedy for children who are very cross. They do not want be touched or...

Can Vitamin C help Childhood Asthma?

Researchers from Tanta University in Egypt and the University of Helsinki in Finland have found that vitamin C can help children with childhood asthma. The study was conducted on 60 asthmatic children aged 7-10 years. The study found that by giving 200mg of vitamin C to an asthmatic child can increase lung capacity by 37 percent. This positive result was greater in younger children (7-8 years). The lung capacity of the older children (8-10 years) only improved by 21 percent. The researchers said that further work is required to identify the age group who have the greatest benefits of vitamin C. This is still a significant improvement, but further studies are required to confirm these findings. This small study does highlight the importance of vitamin C in our diet. 200mg of vitamin C can easily be obtained from eating a small portion of varied fruit a day. This further highlights the importance of a balanced diet for children. We hope you found our article on the benefits of vitamin C for childhood asthma useful. Please let us know by rating it...

Homeopathic remedies for after child vaccinations

Vaccination is a very controversial and difficult decision that many parents face. There is a lot of conflicting information regarding the safety and efficacy of childhood vaccines. One of the main issues regarding childhood vaccines is the amount of vaccines that babies are exposed to, even before their immune systems are fully developed. On average a baby will have up to 20 vaccines, before the age of 2. This can put a lot of strain on their immune systems. Vaccines can cause a host of side effects, ranging from a mild fever, rashes, vomiting, through to seizures and anaphylactic reactions. There are many books and websites that offer you advice and alternatives to vaccination. A website that I recommend to parents is www.informedparent.co.uk. This site provides impartial advice to parents regarding vaccination. Many parents also complain that their G.P’s pressurise them and often feel bullied into vaccinating their children without being able to make an informed choice. It is therefore important to do as much research as possible before deciding whether or not to vaccinate. If you choose to go ahead and vaccinate your baby, there are homeopathic remedies that you can give to help prevent some of the side effects, and help to clear the toxic effects of the vaccines.  I have recommended the following remedies for many babies, including my nephew and niece. These natural homeopathic remedies have helped to prevent many of the side effects of vaccines, but they need to be given correctly. The main remedies are Silica and Thuja. I usually combine these into a single remedy. The most effective way that I have found is by giving these remedies in a liquid form. Two drops of this remedy 5mls of water is equivalent to one dose. You will need to purchase these remedies from a specialist homeopathic pharmacy, such as Ainsworths, Helios or Weleda. This remedy should be given alongside a homeopathic remedy made from the specific vaccine. For example if your child was having the DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) vaccine, you should give a dose of DTP 30C before vaccination, after vaccination and a last dose that evening. The Silica/Thuja 30C combination remedy should be given straight after vaccination, and then twice...

Homeopathic remedies for glue ear

Glue ear is a condition that is very common in young children and infants. Approximately four in five children will have had the condition by the age of 5. The medical term for glue ear is otitis media with effusion. This condition is generally caused by repeated middle ear infections resulting in an accumulation of sticky fluid behind the ear drum. There are a selection of homeopathic remedies for glue ear available. The symptoms of glue ear are different to those of middle ear infections. The child won’t necessarily complain of pain or have a fever. The main problem is increasing deafness and in extreme cases total hearing loss. These symptoms usually come on gradually, so your child may not be aware of the condition. The hearing impairment may result in your child having problems with paying attention, interacting with other children, and problems with balance. The child may also have problems with speech and language. Homeopathic remedies can be given safely and effectively to young children to treat glue ear. Conventional treatment involves antibiotics, steroids and in some cases surgery. Repeated use of antibiotics in young children can compromise natural immune function, and lead to more infections! It is therefore advisable to consider homeopathy and other natural treatments such as cranial osteopathy. The following homeopathic remedies can be given to children of any age. You should give the remedies in the 30c potency, three times a day for up to two weeks. If there is no improvement after this time, please consult a qualified homeopath. Pulsatilla is a remedy that should be in every home. This homeopathic remedy can be used for many childhood conditions. Pulsatilla is indicated for glue ear that follows an ear infection. The child may complain of a stuffed up or full feeling in the ear. Children who require this remedy will be emotional, clingy and require lots of sympathy. The symptoms will generally be better in open air. There may be discharges from the ear that are thick, bland and yellow/green in colour. Merc Sol is a homeopathic remedy that is commonly prescribed for infections. This natural remedy is indicated for ear discharge that is smelly and thick. The child may also have a lot of...
