Health Benefits of 5-HTP (hydroxytryptophan)

If you like this post - share it with others ! 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is derivative of the amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is found in high protein foods such as soya, cheese, fish, meat, nuts, pumpkin seeds and lentils. The body converts tryptophan from our diet, to 5-HTP. This health supplement has been used to treat depression, insomnia, obesity and migraines. Although it is available in many health foods stores, you should consult a qualified nutritionist, pharmacist or doctor before started treatment. As you can see, most of the health benefits of this supplement relate to the brain. Once 5-HTP enters the brain, it is converted to the neurotransmitter called serotonin. Serotonin is responsible for various functions of the brain, including regulating mood, appetite and sleep. Some health professionals suggest that low levels of serotonin are a consequence of modern living. Life-style and diet can result in lower levels of this neurotransmitter in the brain. Benefits Depression: Doctors have been prescribing 5-HTP for the treatment of depression for decades. Studies have found that this supplement maybe more effective at treating depression than conventional anti-depressant drugs. An added benefit is that 5-HTP produces fewer side effects than anti-depressant drugs. Sleep:  This nutrient has also been found to promote and improve the quality of sleep. Through a number of natural reactions in the brain, 5-HTP is converted to melatonin. Melatonin helps to regulate the body’s circadian cycle. The circadian rhythm is an internal body clock that plays an essential role when we fall asleep and wake up. Our bodies produce more melatonin when it is dark (night-time) and less in day light. People who have taken 5-HTP have generally reported waking up feeling more relaxed and rested. Appetite: 5-HTP has been shown to have appetite regulating properties. In one study, women who took this supplement were found to consume fewer calories, lost more weight and were more likely to feel full while on adiet compared to those who did not. 5-HTP has also been found to be effective at reducing binge eating, which is often responsible for weight gain. Pain Relief: Low levels of serotonin are related to decreased pain tolerance. As 5-HTP increases levels of serotonin, it has been shown to...

If you like this post - share it with others ! New research has claimed that taking one vitamin B supplement a day from middle age could protect your memory with age, and even ward off Alzheimer’s disease. The research was conducted by scientists at Oxford University. The research was conducted on pensioners who took high doses of the vitamin once a day for two years. The results found that the pensioners who took the supplement did 70% better on a simple memory test than those who did not. The Oxford University scientists claim that the vitamin B tablet prevents the memory lapses that can be a precursor to dementia and that it cut brain shrinkage (linked to memory loss) by up to 500%. The researchers are advising people to take a high dose vitamin B tablet from middle age. They do, however stress to seek your doctor’s advice first. The vitamin B supplement greatly reduced the shrinkage of the brain, which happens naturally with age, but this reduction was higher in those people with the highest levels of a chemical called homocysteine in their bloodstream. Homecysteine is a naturally occurring compound that builds up in the body as we age, and high levels are linked to various illnesses, such as alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, stroke and osteoporosis. Vitamin B, specifically B6, B12 and B9, break down homocysteine, and therefore can help to prevent these illnesses. We hope you found our article on Vitamin B supplements & Alzheimers disease useful. The body produces L-glutamine naturally and is also available in a number of foods and dietary supplements. Glutamine has many health functions. It is found in large amounts in the muscles and required to build and maintain muscle mass. Due to its muscle building quality, Glutamine is often used by body builders and athletes to gain extra muscle mass and size. However, this is not the only benefit of L-glutamine. This amino acid has a number of health properties. Muscles Glutamine can help to prevent muscle wasting which can be caused by illnesses or long periods of bed rest. This amino acid supports the body at times of stress. A large amount of the glutamine in the muscles can be released as times of stress or illness, resulting in a loss of skeletal muscle. Supplementing with glutamine can prevent happening. Immune System Glutamine also plays an important role in supporting the immune system. It aids immune cells in killing bacteria and healing wounds. Glutamine also supports the multiplication of white blood cells which strengthen the immune system. Brain Health This amino acid is sometimes referred to as brain fuel, as it readily crosses the blood-brain barrier. Glutamine is converted to glutamic acid in the brain, which is essential for brain function. Glutamine also increases the levels of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), which is required for healthy brain function and mental activity. This health supplement has been used to treat depression, epilepsy and developmental disabilities, such as austism. Digestive Health One of the more common uses of glutamine is in the treatment of leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut syndrome is well known condition today, mainly due to the increased use of anti-inflammatory medications and food allergies. This makes the intestines more permeable and allows foods to pass through the gut wall into circulation. This results in more food allergies, causing abdominal pain and irritation. This condition is quite common amongst the elderly population. This is partly due to the slowing down of their digestive system, and more commonly on the painkillers that they are prescribed. It is quite shocking to see the number of elderly people who are prescribed codeine based painkillers. The main side-effect of these medicines is constipation. Most of these people are prescribed laxatives on a daily basis, which results in the large intestine and bowels becoming “lazy”. Diet is the most important factor in preventing and treating constipation. By increasing the amount of fibre and fluids you will greatly reduce your chances of developing this condition and speed up your recovery. Fibre is found in many foods, such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains. It is important not to overcook the vegetables, as lightly cooked or raw vegetables will add more fibre to your diet. Wholemeal bread, brown rice, wholemeal pasta, pulses, lentils and whole grain breakfast cereals are a good source of high fibre foods. Fibre adds “bulk” and helps to soften the bowel motions. This helps to stimulate bowel contractions. Adding extra fibre to your diet also helps to lower cholesterol levels. Prune...

If you like this post - share it with others ! Chromium is a naturally occurring trace mineral that has gained popularity as a slimming and sports supplement. This mineral is essential for the break-down of carbohydrates and fats. Chromium is also thought to work by increasing the action of insulin, which helps to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Many vitamin companies promote chromium as a weight loss supplement, by claiming it can suppress appetite, increase metabolism and burn body fat. These claims have been tested in many trials, and the results have been mixed. Some studies have reported significant weight loss, whereas other studies have reported no change in body weight. A sensible approach would be to combine supplementation with a good diet and regular exercise. An area where chromium may be of benefit is in supporting the pancreas and prevention of type 2 diabetes. In this form of diabetes, the pancreas usually produces enough insulin, but the body cannot use the insulin effectively. Insulin is important for regulating the amount of sugar in the blood. If there is insufficient insulin in the body, the blood sugar levels rise, and can lead to diabetes. Chromium may prevent this by supporting the pancreas and allowing the body to use insulin more effectively. This mineral may also help to break down fats and lower “bad” LDL cholesterol. These claims have not been confirmed as more evidence is required. Chromium is found naturally in many foods: Whole grain cereals Whole grain bread Potatoes Brewers Yeast Broccoli Nuts Seafood Chromium supplements are usually available in 200mcg capsules. This is the recommended dose for a weight-loss programme or to improve the utilisation of insulin. This dose will require a supplement as this amount will be hard to achieve through diet alone. Chromium should be taken with or after food, as this helps its absorption.  This mineral is also better absorbed when taken with Vitamin C (or a glass of orange juice). Calcium supplement s can reduce the absorption of chromium, so should not be taken together. We hope you found our article on Chromium as a weight loss supplement useful. The researchers found that the adults who took the CLA had more fat loss than those who took a placebo over the six month period. The placebo group actually gained weight during this period. The results of this study indicate that CLA can help to lower body fat and also to keep weight off. CLA has been available for many years as a weight loss pill, with varying results. This fatty acid is found in red meat, lamb and dairy products. You could increase your intake of these foods, but they are also high in saturated fats and can increase your chance of heart disease and other illnesses. A more sensible way is to take a CLA supplement for up to 6 months, alongside a calorie controlled diet and regular exercise.  The recommended dose is 1 to 3 grams once a day, preferably in the...

Free radicals can be formed by factors such as exposure to radiation(including over exposure to the sun’s rays), cigarette smoke, air pollution, exercise, processed foods, household cleaners and stress. The body also produces free radicals through various metabolic processes such as the breakdown of stored fat for use as an energy source.
